In my life, the one thing I have always struggled with is being social. Yes it’s true and it might seem
surprising to most but It was not always easy to talk and hold conversations with others. But I soon
found out that through food I could communicate and connect with others better.

While I was in nursery school there used to be a cooking day, it was my favorite day as all the students
got to sit together and eat food. Usually we did activities like painting and studying on our own, but while
eating all of us were together. Hence, I did not feel alone and really enjoyed it.

Fun cooking day

And in 2005 when I started my food blogging journey, I was one of the youngest food bloggers in South
Korea at the time. By 2010, I used to visit many restaurants and review their food.

Slowly, my interest in food increased. Having previously received a cooking certificate which
acknowledged my skills as a food blogger; I started to share the food recipes on my blog along with the
review of the restaurant.

A few years later in 2012, I volunteered to go to Jordan in order to teach photography. One day I
participated in a cultural exchange event and prepared Tteok-guk (Korean rice-cake soup). In Jordan, all
types of meat are not consumed, and I didn’t know which meat is not allowed.

The soup stock that I brought from South Korea had pork in it. I realized it too late and then my students
came and told me that they are not allowed to eat pork meat. It was a very embarrassing situation, as
nobody could eat the food that I prepared. I learned that every country has a different food culture and
religion. This experience made me want to learn more in detail about different food and cultures.

As stated in my India Column, I’ve traveled the world for over 10 years. One of my favorite things to do
during my travels is visiting the local markets and making food with local ingredients. I also liked to try
the local street food as it is prepared using the local ingredients.

I met many people in my travels but due to the language barrier, we couldn’t have a deep conversation.
However, we shared a deeper connection through the food. I always cooked food for my friends and felt
connected with them. Food transcends nationality and race. It proved to be a great tool for
communication and it enabled me to communicate with people from different countries despite the
language barrier.

Eating Korean food with her sweeties in Mumbai

As a kid, I didn’t know how to communicate and made many mistakes. But now I have my Sweeties from
all around the world who communicate with me on YouTube, how times have changed…
